Divided We Fall

This has been one of the most interesting weeks in political history that our nation has ever seen. The Democratic
party, which has been almost equally divided between Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, now stands on
the threshold of defining its future in the next presidential election. This is a crucial time for the party; a fact that
is almost certainly not lost on all the key players.

The Republican party is no doubt reveling in the divisive tactics that have engulfed its rival. John McCain is doing
everything from challenging Obama to several debates to trying to woo over the disgruntled Clinton supporters.
This is a golden opportunity for the Republicans. A chance for them to remain in power for at least another four
years. It’s also a chance for America to remain repressed and in turmoil.

The Democratic party must unite. With Obama’s victory in delegates, making him the almost certain candidate,
he and Mrs. Clinton have been meeting almost daily. They have not made public exactly what they’re discussing,
but uniting their party has got to be the topic of conversation. Whether they achieve this through his asking her to
be his running mate, or simply her open support of Obama, it’s a goal they’ve got to reach in order for the
Democrats to have a chance at taking back the Oval Office in November.

There is no question about what the Republicans have done to our nation in the last eight years. President Bush
has almost seemingly pushed our country down the drain on purpose. Why? I don’t think we’ll know these
answers for a long time. He has been intent on keeping the war in Iraq going at any cost. This is a war that was
waged on very iffy intelligence from the start. This
iffy-ness has been confirmed as well. President Bush has
some reason for invading Iraq. He blamed it to begin with on winning the war on terror. He said Saddam Hussein
had weapons of mass destruction. He did not. Now it seems that the rising price of oil is playing a part in all this.
Why shouldn’t Mr. Bush want that? He’s a multi millionaire in the oil industry already, so every day he makes a
fortune personally. Also, congress will no longer give him a blank check to fund the war in Iraq, so he’s got to
keep it going somehow, and the Federal Government collects a tax on every gallon of gas sold. How interesting.

Yet I digress. Or do I? Our country is in a hell of a mess. The economy is in the toilet. Mr. Bush seems to think
it’s not so bad, but he isn’t having to worry about where his gas and groceries come from. Republicans always
want the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. They expect the middle class to support the whole nation
through taxation. Under the Republicans, the rich never pay a lot in taxes. The poor stay poor because they
cannot afford anything. The middle class works to live a hand to mouth life. The government makes out like
bandits. This is what the Republicans have done for us…and we’ve elected one as President in the last two
elections.

When Bill Clinton was in office, the economy boomed. Taxation was spread out more evenly. Everybody who
wanted a job had one. Mr. Clinton also put millions of welfare junkies off the government’s payroll and forced
them back to work. When he left office, the budget was balanced and this country had a surplus. For the first
time in over twenty years, the US had a surplus instead of a deficit! The Republicans hated Clinton for this, too.
They did everything they could to discredit him. From the Monica Lewinsky debacle to trumped up tax charges,
they failed in every one of these efforts. Bill Clinton proved just what the Democratic ideals can do for our nation.
He proved it in spades.

So that is why it is so crucial for the Democratic party to unite now. Mr. Obama will be the party candidate. I
agree that it would be to his benefit to ask Mrs. Clinton to be his running mate. Together they hold almost the
entirety of  Democratic support between them. Why wouldn’t they work together to take back our nation from
the hands of those who have ruined it? And why would they keep the status quo by not uniting?

Whether Obama chooses Hillary or not, I know it is imperative for all Democrats to come together in the coming
months. For anyone who supported Mrs. Clinton to say that they would rather vote for McCain than Obama is
proof positive that they aren’t behind their party in the first place. I’ve never been one to choose a party. I’ve
always voted for whoever I thought was right for the job. Yet right now I feel very much a part of the
Democratic party because I’ve seen what the Republicans can do and what they’ve done is make the US a land of
ruined dreams.

So I urge everyone to come together and to give our country a chance this November. As Mrs. Clinton ends her
current candidacy for president, everyone has to make a stand. There can be no screw ups this time either. We all
saw what can happen when an election is rigged, and ultimately stolen, back in November of 2000. It’s time for
us to move into the 21st Century. It’s also time an inept and antiquated party called Republicans to begin fizzling
into obscurity.  It’s now or never.

United we stand. Divided we fall.

Have a wonderful week and God bless...
